2021 Bathurst 6 Hour – Friday Notebook

A busy, but positive Friday for all the GWR entries at the Bathurst 6 Hour. Here’s a summary of what happened across the three categories.

Bathurst 6 Hour

Car #42 – Garth Walden/Michael Auld

Very competitive early pace for the Mercedes A45 AMG, with fourth in the opening practice session and seventh in the second session. Both drivers are happy with the car’s performance at this stage of the weekend.

Car #45 – Michael Sheargold/Ollie Shannon/Brett Hobson

Shannon and Sheargold took control of the RAM Motorsport Mercedes in the first practice session, with Shannon immediately setting competitive times and placing the car 11th. Sheargold did the bulk of the second session with Hobson climbing aboard for the final three laps and they ended up 17th overall, Hobson commenting on the quietness of the Mercedes compared to his Nissan GTR.

Car #17 – Ben Kavich/Michael Kavich

The Mitsubishi Evo X ended up 18th and 23rd in the two practice sessions, but both drivers said the results were not indicative of the car’s pace. Ben ran off at the Chase on his best lap, with sector times that would have put him inside the top 10 and then the car’s clutch master cylinder failed, necessitating a return to the garage.

GT World Challenge

An excellent day for Brett Hobson in the Nissan GTR, topping the Trophy Class in both sessions and running inside the top three outright. Hobson said there is still plenty of performance left in reserve and is very satisfied with his progress so far.

RA Cup

Peter Paddon was the best of the GWR RA Cup qualifiers, ending up third outright and second in the Radical SR3 class. It was a particularly impressive effort considering the engine in his Radical SR3 RSX failed in practice, necessitating a rapid-fire engine change between sessions.

Chris Perini and Steve Champion were immediately behind Paddon, meaning GWR cars will start third, fourth and fifth on the grid tomorrow; Phil Anseline ended the day 11th.
